This back cover White-Knuckled War Stories No. 1 is in imitation of the war comics genre,
and the design of the cover imitates a series with what I've always thought of as an
unusual name, Two-Fisted Tales, illustrated here with issue #29 from September-October 1952.

|
This back cover of Simpsons Comics #13 Wedgie #1 takes it's inspiration from Archie comics.
|
|
This cover mirrors many of the elements of the original design of Archie comics
which began in January 1942. Wedgie #1 leverages the
original Archie design, including the font, the most common color pallette, a yellow stripe
across the top proclaiming "Springfield's #1 Hooligan!" instead of "America's Typical Teenager"
and the script "comics" on the lower right, illustrated above to the right with
Archie #37 from January 1949. Bongo then wisely chose to integrate a famous element of
the subsequent design that began in January 1956 with Archie #81, the face of Archie
above the title. This is illustrated to the right with Archie #101 from June 1959, mirrored on
Wedgie with the face of Jimbo.

Bongo Beat: My First Bully, Part One, by Matt Groening
Part Two appeared below in Simpsons Comics #16.
This Bongo Beat article was subsequently reprinted in Simpsons Comics Royale.
|
The back cover of this comic Heinous Funnies #1 dated December 1933
is an obvious parody of Famous Funnies #1 from July 1934, considered the
first comic. Famous Funnies collected comics from newspapers and continued to do so for hundreds
of issues. I attribute the earlier dating on the Heinous Funnies as a subtle
comment it was the earlier of the two and hence the first comic.
The tilt and font of the Heinous Funnies title and the "No. 1" closely resembles
the style of the original comic.

The Junk Mail section invited fans to
"replace the bolt" on Radioactive Man, supplying a page without the
lightning bolt on his head. Submissions from that contest were printed in
Simpsons Comics #21 .
A comic "grab bag" refers to the specific practice of offering a bag of (non-current)
comics at a discount, one observed at all comic trade shows (comic "cons").

Bongo Beat is a memoriam:
Doris Grau (1924-1995), by Matt Groening
Headlight Comics is a slang term referring to the genre of comics
featuring women with prominent anatomy, as illustrated on the flip cover of this issue. See
Wikipedia if that
isn't sufficiently clear.
|
Not a cover, but a look at a KrustyCo faux advertisement within, one older comic book fans might
imagine seems familiar. Sure enough, they've parodied the Spalding advertisement that appeared in comics
from the 1970's on the right! Check out how each panel above on the left duplicated the original panel
on the right.

This Bongo Beat article was subsequently reprinted in Simpsons Comics Royale.
The design of the flip cover is, of course, of a baseball card, matching the design of the
Topps 1965 card set. The style of the title "Milhouse" matches the style used in many sports
logos, including the Major League baseball teams the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Kansas City Royals.
