This list (attempts to) include all references made to the states,
commonwealths & territories of the United States, including references to cities
and other landmarks within the states.
For the corresponding list of foreign countries please see the list that inspired
this list, A Foreign Affair by Claus Rasmussen.
Some guidelines as to what we've included and excluded;
1. Only direct references to states and cities within the states are included.
We do not include all the indirect and implied references, including all the
implied states in the "Where is Springfield" discussions. Those can be found in
the Where is Springfield list by Andrew A. Gill.
2. Animal names, such as the Alaskan Timber Wolf, are included.
3. People named after states are included.
4. Universities are included.
5. Sport teams are included, recorded under the place they're named after
6. Songs about a state (or city within a state) are included.
